The first clinical trial of Buteyko in the western world was conducted in Brisbane, Australia in 1994. The results showed that the Buteyko participants were able to reduce their need for medicines that open the airways, such as Ventolin, by 96%, their steroid medications by 49% and their symptoms by more than 70%.
