When the automatic breathing pattern becomes greater than the level of metabolism, this is called hyperventilation. Mostly we think of hyperventilation as panting or breathing vigorously, but it can be much more subtle. Breathing more air than is considered normal is easily achieved just by breathing slightly faster or with slightly more effort. The breathing might still be silent without obvious chest movement, and only really noticeable when you look for it. For example:
12 breaths a minute of .5 litre of air = 6 litres
20 breaths a minute of .5 litre of air = 10 litres
Would you notice if you breathed once every three seconds instead of once every five? It's unlikely that you would, yet just by doing this you will have inhaled an extra four litres of air in one minute, and more than an extra 5700 litres in a day.
