Teach Buteyko

Training outline

The Buteyko training with Russell and Jennifer Stark begins with some reading and completion of assignments, usually before the practical work starts.  This makes the practical course work easier because the reading and assignments provide a greater level of understanding. However, it is possible to combine the two if necessary.

The first part of the training is self-paced, so it can be started at any time, and can take a number of months to complete if necessary.

The second part of the training includes the practical component where the theory and the 'real' work with people who have breathing problems, such as asthma, snoring, sleep apnoea, hay fever, allergies, emphysema and panic attacks are blended together.

Because this part of the training involves real people who have real breathing problems, it is usually only held at particular times of the year, usually involves some travel on the part of the trainee, and it needs to be fully co-ordinated with the trainer.

On each day of the practical course a minimum of two hours (usually three) is spent working through the theory, strategies, techniques and philosophy of the Buteyko method. As well as the theory, there are also two Buteyko classes each day with people who have breathing problems.

"I thought that there was all the opportunity I needed to ask questions and explore my understanding of the information. I thought you [Jennifer] were a perfect model for teaching. You presented the material in a very honest and direct manner. I think your teaching was empowered by the belief you have that the Buteyko Method works and your desire to see people have the tools they need to help themselves.

I was very impressed by the depth of your knowledge about breathing disorders. It was evident that you have worked with thousands of people. I saw in you, adaptability in teaching style and how to work the program. Your obvious experience allowed you to find ways to make the program work for everyone."

As the trainee's knowledge and confidence grows during the practical course, he or she plays a larger role in teaching the Buteyko method to paying clients who are wanting to improve their health while under the direct supervision of the trainer.

The third part of the training its self-paced and involves the completion of more assignments, and also teaching clients with breathing problems without direct supervision. Short case histories are recorded on the first fifty people that the trainee teaches, and these make up part of the assessment.

The Buteyko method is not a 'one-size-fits-all' programme, but instead the techniques and strategies are varied to best-suit the client. The sole purpose of the practical work and the assessment is to create a more knowledgeable and confident practitioner so that these variations can be made intelligently.

I appreciated your patience to go over material more than once with me. I felt supported by the follow up emails and conversations that made my teaching the work as a beginner, easier. I also liked the preparation work you had me do before coming to New Zealand. You imbued me with an honour and integrity that this work deserves. Thank you.”
