Post traumatic stress disorder

Is there a hyperventilation connection?

Hyperventilation causes all kinds of weird symptoms that can be scary, and that also mimic the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). And so there may very well be a cross-over between the two problems.

The fight or flight response is strongly connected to hyperventilation, and it works in two ways:

  1. if your subconscious suspects that you are in danger then it will fly into action to save you. Part of the fight or flight response is to rapidly increase the automatic breathing pattern.
  2. If you inadvertently increase your breathing too much because of terrible memories, then the fight or flight response will switch on, increasing the breathing further.

While using something like the Buteyko method to breathe more normally does not in anyway change what has already occurred, or invalidate the very real symptoms of PTSD, it may help to reduce them to some degree, and this can provide a sense of control.
