Symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder

The symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) include:

  • Symptoms of extreme stress, such as a pounding heart, sweating, or fear when reminded of the traumatic event either by the person's own thoughts, or when in a situation that resembles in some way the original trauma
  • An excessive startle response
  • Flashbacks, or reliving the event over and over in your mind
  • Amnesia, or a blocking out of the event of the event from your conscious memory
  • Poor sleep, which may include problems of insomnia, or nightmares that are re-enactments of the event
  • Being overly alert to the possibility of similar situations re-occurring, and taking steps to avoid this happening
